There are millions of pounds of samples thrown away each year by the design community. Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a way to give all of these samples second life?
Well, there finally is! GDC has partnered with Non-Toxic Environments to put on Re_Purposeful.

Re_Purposeful started just over three years ago when a group designers, including GDC’s own, decided to put aside just the materials that they had in their own showrooms and offices.
By the end of the summer they had collected 11,000 pounds of carpet, tile, fabric, laminate and wood samples. Now that we have all of these materials, what should we do with them?

We decided to hold an ‘open house’ and allow the community to collect the materials for FREE. We reached out to schools, daycares and non-profits, mainly via social media and people actually showed up. After two days of open house we had given away about 10,000 pounds of what we had collected with amazing feedback from all who attended. Success!

Over the course of the last three years the event has continue to grow, to the point where we are now looking to hold the event at a larger venue. Before collection for 2017 begun, we had already diverted over 89,000 pounds of material from landfills.

Teachers, day cares and non-profits used the materials for their art projects, fine motor skill enhancement and general classroom updates. We have had homeowners find enough coordinating tile to redo a bathroom or entry way. And crafters have been able to reimagine the materials we ways we would have never thought of!

Each year the event continues to grow and so do its partners. 2017 partners currently include RBC Childcrest, WasteCap Solutions and Green Design Center.
Interested in getting involved as a partner or attending the event, please do not hesitate to reach out!
